Break Time
Hiatus time for this blog.... Look for an all-new Surf Like A Girl site in late 2010. In the meantime, I am still blogging over at Sideshow By the Seashore. Thanks! --Stef McDonald

World Ocean Day
Photos taken in Venice Beach, CA.
It's been a busy week and we missed World Oceans Day on June 8. I live where I get to see (and hear and smell) the ocean every day (and think I'm one of the luckiest girls in the world for that). Protecting our oceans is vital; huge kudos to those who make it their mission to do so, like the fine folks who work for Heal the Bay and Surfrider. --Stef McDonald

John Wooden's Lessons
Basketball is not a board sport, but I have been a fan of the game for as long as I can remember (before I ever dreamed of riding waves on a surfboard!). There were many moving tributes last week following news of the passing of legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden and I went to his website to explore more about his career and teachings. Like all good coaches, he was a teacher whose lessons went beyond getting the ball across the court and into the basket. His widely used "pyramid of success" can be applied off the court as well, and has been adopted by businesses and others. I love that some of the "12 Lessons in Leadership" (see above and more on his website) are also lessons for life, including "Make each day your masterpiece."--Stef McDonald

Beauty for Beach Days
Sunscreen:
I consulted the Environmental Working Group's Sunscreen Guide and was happy to find my favorite SPF 30 sunscreens by Badger and California Baby ranked highest for safety and effectiveness. The Badger SPF 30 sunscreen stick is also good to apply pre-surf for nose, ears, hands, and cheeks, and their SPF 15 lip balm stays put during surf or swim sessions and beach yoga classes.
Hats:
I've got a collection of hats and make a point to wear one when spending more than a few minutes outdoors. Baseball caps (Yankees AND Dodgers, showing my East and West coast support!); straw cowboy hats; cotton floppy hats. When in the water, I wear a beat-up baseball cap and tie the string on my wetsuit zipper to the hat (so it doesn't get lost at sea when I wipe out).
Makeup:
Even when I'm wearing only sunscreen on my face, I like to put a little color on my lips. My current favorite is Jane Iredale's PureMoist Lip Colour SPF18. There are no harsh chemicals or artificial colors and it's got SPF protection. My favorite is a soft and pretty red color named Nicole, which I dab on lightly for a bit of color during the day; at night, I wear it loud and proud. I have become a devotee of many of Iredale's products and also like to use some of the 24-Karat Gold Dust powder (mineral, nothing toxic) for a subtle shimmer on eyelids and cheeks or to blend it with some moisturizer or sunscreen for a pretty glow. You can find more safe-for-you cosmetics (and see how the products you already use rank) at the Skin Deep Cosmetic Database from the Environmental Working Group; for even more information on the safety of makeup and personal care products, visit the site for the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics.
Beach Hair Spray:
I make my own beach hair spray. In a spray bottle, I mix 1 cup of filtered water, 1 tablespoons of sea salt, 1 teaspoon shea butter, 2-3 drops of essential oil of choice (I like jasmine and orange). Shake and spray. (Twist and braid a few pieces of hair for some waves.)
Hair bands:
Self-promotional plug! I make hair bands, from basic black elastic bands embellished them with recycled scraps of fabric (denim, hankie, chino, linen, tulle, silk tie...) and sell them on my Etsy shop, which features upcycled and vintage clothing and accessories.
Moisturizer:
Shea butter, from head to toe.

Oil Spill Reaction Online
I saw on Facebook that some friends had joined a group calling for the use of BP executives to plug the hole--and then I heard about this fake BP Twitter account that tackles the subject of the oil spill with razor-sharp satire (we'll see how long it's up before BP takes it down--betting they'll be able to stop this faster than the mess they made in our seas). Of course, it's an environmental tragedy that is breaking our hearts--but sometimes you've gotta use humor to deal with news this bad. Oh, and it also feels good to do something to support those environmental organizations that work tirelessly to protect our seas. (Here in LA, we salute Heal the Bay and Surfrider.)--Stef McDonald

Jack Johnson's Concert to Clean the Beach
Another reason to love Jack Johnson: he's performing a free concert on the Santa Monica Pier to help Heal the Bay, a kick-ass organization that works to keep our sea and seaside clean in Los Angeles. It's billed as a "Concert To Clean The Beach" and that's how you get your ticket to see him perform on the pier -- by participating in a beach clean-up organized by Heal the Bay a few days before the concert.--Stef McDonald
UPDATE: It was great. Not sure how long this will be live, but the concert was streamed live and can be seen here.

Oil Spill Horror: Taking Action
If you're like us, you've read about the oil spill and felt bad about it, but maybe you have stopped short of looking at too many images or reading deep into how terrible it really is. Take a look at these photos from the Boston Globe. It's horrible. So what can we do? Wind power, people! Read about it and put in your two-cents and write to Congress, asking for a change. --Stef McDonald

Out in the Sun: Safe Sunscreen
Something that cannot be denied: surfer girls get a lot of sun. But there's good protection from the harmful rays and you might be surprised by what's in most sunscreen products (you don't really want to know, but you really should pay attention). I posted about safe sunscreens on my other blog: Sideshow By the Seashore. Lather up.--Stef McDonald

Public Art Rules: Lifeguard Tower Painting
We were public art servants today, painting a local lifeguard tower for the "Portraits of Hope Life Guard Towers" project. 100 towers in Southern California were painted vibrant colors today -- the Venice one I worked on with fellow art-loving neighbors was orange -- and panels will soon be added for the installation, which will be on display May through September. --Stef McDonald

Lifeguard Tower Art in Los Angeles
We just heard about a public art program involving kids called Portraits of Hope, which has been given the go-ahead to transform lifeguard towers with art in Los Angeles this year. 100 towers will be covered in panels and painted along 30 miles of beach May through September of 2010. Sweet!--Stef McDonald

Snowboard Design Contest
Venture Snowboards is allowing the public (that's you) to vote on designs for the "Venture/Protect Our Winters" art contest, with the design to be placed on a board. It's a good-cause mission, with the snowboard company partnering with Protect Our Winters (POW), in an effort to raise awareness on global warming. We can get definitely down with that. Voting goes to March 15.--Stef McDonald

Winter Olympics: Fever? We've Got It
I love that the opening ceremonies began with a snowboarder making a dramatic entrance (wow!) and I still have K.D. Lang's version of fellow Canadian Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" in my head (so beautiful). You can watch the clip (and others) if you have your cable info for access here and below is another video of Lang singing it--for instant gratification--because the song is so beautiful and she really nails it. But because Cohen is such a treasure, I am also posting a clip of him singing his song during last year's Coachella concert festival (it was hands-down one of the most amazing performances of the weekend and I felt lucky to be there to hear it).--Stef McDonald

Mavericks Wave Knocks Over Spectators
The Mavericks surf contest always promises excitement. But spectators expect to witness the excitement from afar--close enough to see but, well, that's close enough. A wave overtook spectators this past week and the several suffered broken bones and while others were bruised and battered. Scary.--Stef McDonald

Kelly Slater Flick: Waves in 3D
I heard Kelly Slater interviewed on the radio about his new surf flick, "Ultimate Wave Tahiti." Searching for the ultimate wave? That's right--the endless (and endlessly fun) pursuit. So what makes this flick different than the last? 3D, for one (3D waves!). It's also another vehicle for the world champion surfer to raise more awareness for protecting the sea and those waves we love to ride.--Stef McDonald
